Educ8 SA and the Bela Bill: A Guide for Homeschooling Parents

Understanding the Bela Bill

The Bela Bill, officially known as the National Education Amendment Act, 2013, introduced significant changes to South Africa's education landscape. While it primarily impacts traditional schools, it also has implications for homeschooling families.

Legal Obligations for Homeschoolers

Homeschooling parents in South Africa are required to adhere to certain legal obligations as outlined by the Bela Bill. These include:

  • Registration: If your child is between the ages of 7 and 14, or has not yet completed grade 9, you must register them with your provincial Department of Education (DoE).

  • Curriculum Compliance: Your chosen curriculum must align with the minimum requirements of the CAPS curriculum. Educ8 SA's Common Core standards meet these requirements.

  • Record Keeping: You must maintain termly reports, attendance records, and outcome standards for each subject and grade level.

Educ8 SA's Support

At Educ8 SA, we understand the importance of compliance and provide homeschooling parents with the necessary tools and resources to meet their legal obligations. Here's what we offer:

  • Outcome Standards: We supply comprehensive outcome standards for each subject and grade level, ensuring that your child's education is aligned with the minimum requirements of the CAPS curriculum.

  • Termly Reports: We recommend that parents request termly reports to track their child's progress and provide evidence of their education.

  • Pestalozzi Trust Recommendation: We strongly encourage and advise parents to register with the Pestalozzi Trust. This organization offers assistance with DoE registration forms and provides valuable legal protection for homeschooling families.

Please note: the DoE needs registration forms to be completed in a very particular manner in order to accept homeschooling students. The Pestalozzi Trust will assist you as the parent each step of the way in order to have your application with the DoE accepted.

By following these guidelines and utilising the resources provided by Educ8 SA, you can ensure that your homeschooling journey is both fulfilling and compliant with the Bela Bill.
